MOJA Festival, Charleston, SC 2023
The Juried show for MOJA this year will be housed in two locations; the Avery Research Center and the City Gallery. It's a beautiful space that is open and light filled so I take advantage of applying for shows there when I can. "MOJA Arts Festival is an annual celebration of Black arts and culture and our artistic contributions to the world, especially through African American and Caribbean legacies. Festival events include visual arts, music, food, dance, poetry, theater, storytelling, traditional crafts and family activities." This year's show coincides with the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop so a separate awards category will include works with a nod to Hip Hop. I've been submitting to this show for years so this thematic challenge was one I embraced. My acrylic painting is titled 1979 Rapper's Delight. Lots going on in 1979 when the Sugarhill Gang's song came out and the memories are fresh in my mind. Bell bottoms, platform shoes, Adidias, vinyl records, and youthful enthusiasm. |
