Paradise & Mother Nature

Events in the news often motivate me to respond through art but recently, places that I've painted and celebrated are now a shell of what they once were, and face a long, slow recovery process thanks to Mother Nature and hurricane Irma while more storms are swirling into formation. I've also lived in Florida and understand the fragility of living in paradise. My paintings are all from Puerto Rico which was spared extensive damage from Irma, but the new storms brewing may not skirt the island next time. (UPDATE 10/7/17- Maria was not far behind and now 2 weeks after PR was hit the island is devastated and people are desperate. All these paintings are framed and any sales will be donated to the relief effort.)

Walking up to Castillo de San Cristóbal, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Bright colors everywhere. "Old San Juan," oil on birch panel, 10x10", $325

Old San Juan has many nooks and crannies to explore. This is the view from an art gallery to an open square filled with one huge tree. "View with a room," oil on birch panel, 10x10", $325

Walking toward Castillo San Felipe del Morro on the ocean side are homes made of cinder block. This basketball court is perched above those modest homes yet below the road with homes of the well off. Better be a good shot in that "in between" world. "Hoops by the Sea," oil on paper, 16x12", $375
Picture
Lots of resorts on the island and the open space is a contrast from the narrow buildings and walkways in Old San Juan. These look like the trees on the Weather Channel that were pummeled by the wind and rain. "Resort Life," oil on paper, 8x10", $285

The Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery near the Castillo San Felipe del Morro is an incredible site right on the water. All white stone has been buffeted by the wind and rain over time. Wish they could talk. The statuary has really captured my imagination. "Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery," oil on paper, 8x8", SOLD

Many of the forms were female and some had wings. This man was simple in comparison. I did look up his name, but don't have it at hand. "Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery ll," 8x8", $200

Thanks, Caryl. Hope to return to PR someday and explore some more. Fascinating history.
