Selfies, a photographic self portrait, say much about the photographer/subject. They intentionally appear spontaneous or well crafted, and the message may be subtle or obvious. With the theme of my show Women's Work in mind, I asked women to submit selfies along with hashtags to tell their story. Reading #s, words strung together without spaces, becomes intuitive and mimics the brevity of social media communication.

The resulting photos were interesting. Some literally depicted their jobs from 9-5, while others depicted their passion or personality, and a few others made artistic images their selfie. They come from different backgrounds and have different interests, yet they all persist with a strong female gaze.

"It's never been
more critical for us
to have a woman's visual perspective."
-Kira Pollack,
TIME'S director of photography.
